I picked up one of these the other day from Newegg for $9.99, after the mail in rebate of course. It is pretty awesome 8GB is about all the storage that I need on a flash drive these days. I won’t bore you with the details, I’ll just show you the HDTune Benchmarks. I had to run the benchmark twice because of that strange spike in the middle. I don’t really know how to explain it. One of these days I’ll run a real benchmark with it and post the results. (These are just read speed tests)

Smart YouTube plugin

I discovered this awesome wordpress plugin that allows you to easily embed valid YouTube video.Â http://www.prelovac.com/vladimir/wordpress-plugins/smart-youtube

Its really easy to use, you just install the plugin and then configure it under the “Settings” tab.Â Then when you want to embed a YouTube video you just type httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dMH0bHeiRNg and it will automagically handle everything for you. You can also embed a video to play in “high quality” by adding an h after the v, httpvh://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dMH0bHeiRNg (notice in both examples the bold v and bold vh.)

If you have ever tried to embed a YouTube video and then tried to validate the HTML of your page, you know that youtube will break your validation.Â I recently discovered the solution.Â Apparently YouTube videos are also supposed to be viewed 320×267, I think I actually like the smaller size.Â I bolded the important parts.

If you don’t know about Notepad++ you are missing out.Â It is amazing.Â I don’t know what else there is to say except that it is amazing.

Gentoo Mirror

I just set up a full source gentoo mirror at mirror.silliam.com. I don’t know if gentoo would want my mirror added to their official pool since it is on shared hosting, so I haven’t submitted a bug report yet. However, I am going to use my mirror, and anyone else is free to use it. I have the bandwidth capped at 5TB, which works out to be about 15Mbit, I think. Anyways, my mirror syncs every four hours, starting at midnight PST using this command:

rsync --avHS --delete-excluded ftp.ussg.iu.edu::gentoo-distfiles /home/silliam/mirror.silliam.com/gentoo/

It then emails me the results of the command, hence the verbose flag (I like to see what files changed).

I am happy to mirror files for anybody, I have much more bandwidth than I could ever use. One of these days, I am going to build a nice python or php framework for mirroring files.

Fractal Backgrounds

I was recently motivated to make myself a really cool looking desktop background. My laptop has a 1280×800 display, so the images are in that resolution. If you want me to make a different resolution, just write a comment and I will be happy to oblige. One of these days I am going to write a short how-to complete with screenshots! The last one is my current background, and probably my favorite.

My Nakamichi Mj-5 and 14 bay SCSI tower is now alive and kicking as a 40 CD ripping machine! After many weeks of waiting and watching on eBay and a small effort on the part of my machinist friend, I have all of the components necessary for a CD ripping beast. Check out Ripzilla for my scripts, pictures of the project, and much more info.Â It is amazing how well the Nakamichi Mj-5 works in linux.
